Prolonged search troubling, alarming: Davao archbishop
Archdiocese of Davao Romulo G. Valles appeals for calm and respect for the rule of law.
In a powerful call for peace, sobriety, and mutual respect among the residents of Davao City, Davao Archbishop Romulo G. Valles, D.D. on Wednesday expressed alarm over the prolonged search for Kingdom of Jesus Christ leader Apollo C. Quiboloy since Saturday dawn.
“The prolonged search being conducted, coupled with the overwhelming presence of law enforcers in a place dedicated for religious worship, and for the education of the youth, is alarming and troubling, as it touches some sensitive issues on religious freedom,” Valles said in a statement.
The archbishop’s heartfelt appeal came amid the gravity of the ongoing tensions at the KOJC compound that resulted in the death of one member and injury of at least 16 others.
“As the Shepherd of the Catholic faithful, I am compelled to speak out on behalf of peace,” his statement read.
While acknowledging that this may not be the ideal moment for an extensive examination of the circumstances leading to the current unrest, he emphasized the call of Dabawenyos and people from other places to respect the rule of law.
“Careful discernment, prudence, and regard for the basic civil liberties guaranteed by our constitution must be observed in compliance with the directives of the Courts,” he said.
Valles added that the Davao Archdiocese implores all parties to engage in introspection and dialogue, prioritizing the humanity and inherent rights of every individual involved.
“I appeal for the immediate peaceful resolution to the situation, and the mutual respect and introspection of all. Let us respect the humanity of everyone, and their inherent rights. Let sobriety take the upper hand in our judgment and action!” he urged as he invited the faithful to pray fervently so that justice and peace may continue to reign in beloved Davao City.
He added: “May our Lord bless us and guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Meanwhile, police continued their search for Pastor Quiboloy yesterday, the 5th day, despite a temporary protection order issued by RTC Branch 15 on August 27.
The local court had instructed the Philippine National Police (PNP) to dismantle blockades around the KOJC compound and cease actions that could jeopardize the safety of its inhabitants.
Police Regional Office 11 Director, Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, said on Tuesday afternoon that they would adhere to the court’s directive to remove the barriers but would continue searching for Pastor Quiboloy within the compound.
PRO 11 spokesperson, Major Catherine Dela Rey, was quick to refute claims that the PNP intended to bomb their compound if Pastor Apollo Quiboloy did not surrender.
"That's another lie, just like their previous claims that we would cut off their water and electricity, when in fact the KOJC compound was beautifully lit last night," she was quoted in Filipino during a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon. (AAA)
