Archbishop Valles: Justice for beloved FPRRD must be pursued with fairness, integrity
As he lamented the deep divisiveness in the country over the arrest of former President Rodrigo R. Duterte and his transfer to The Hague, Netherlands for trial before the International Criminal Court, Davao Archbishop Romulo G. Valles said justice must be pursued with fairness and integrity.
“It must remain free from partisan political motivations or personal vendettas,” Valles said in his Pastoral Message to all Christian faithful of Davao on Tuesday.
He urged the government to uphold due process, adhere to the rule of law, and respect the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence.
“Only through such commitment to justice can true peace be achieved,” his message read.
He said the country is now at a crossroads over the arrest and has strained relationships, challenging the people’s unity.
“In this time of uncertainty and discord, the Catholic Church remains steadfast as a beacon of faith, hope, and charity,” Valles said, acknowledging the pain and frustration throughout the nation, particularly among those who view themselves as past victims of injustice.
The Davao Archdiocese, he added, affirms the importance of accountability and extends its pastoral support and prayers to the former President and his family.
“He being a son of this local Church, so beloved by a vast number of our faithful,” Valles said.
Reconciliation over conflict
Quoting prophet Micah, “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8),” he said the Church's mission to preach the Gospel calls for upholding truth, protecting human dignity, and promoting the common good.
“We therefore call upon you, our faithful here in the archdiocese, to reject hatred and division, choosing instead the path of dialogue over discord, and reconciliation over conflict,” he said.
He enjoined Filipinos to pray for God's mercy, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the intercession of Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, to steer our country toward true justice and lasting peace.
